Design Partnerships Revealed for New Richmond Hotel, Retail and Residential Development Near the Olympic Oval

We are thrilled to announce that Landa Global Properties will once again be working with Arno Matis Architecture and Rafii Architects on our newly-acquired, 3.5-acre site near the Olympic Oval. Located at Elmbridge Way and River Road, the site is part of the Oval Village, in the heart of Richmond City Centre’s premier waterfront community. The new, three-tower, mixed-use development will include a hotel, retail and residential homes.

This signature team of architects worked together on our first Richmond project, Cascade City, a two-tower residential development that is now 85% sold and has become an architectural icon in the city. For the Oval project, we will also be teaming up with Studio Munge on the design. This is our first collaboration with Studio Munge, the designers behind Vancouver’s Rosewood Hotel Georgia and the JW Marriott Parq, and we are excited to add them as partners to the project team.

“We want to create a special destination development for Richmond, and we knew from working with our partners on Cascade City, that they would come up with a new landmark design for this site and activate it in a way that is dynamic, inclusive and beneficial to the community,” said Kevin Cheung, Landa CEO. “We believe this particular site, across from the Olympic Oval, is one of the best locations in the city of Richmond, and we look forward to working with this team of partners again to build a world-class development.”

Cascade City will complete this summer, and the design team is now shifting its focus to this new project and to creating another outstanding architectural legacy for the city.

“We are excited to work with Landa, Rafii, and Studio Munge to build on the success of Cascade City,” said Arno Matis, principal. “Landa gave us the freedom to explore building form and shape, which differentiated Cascade City in the marketplace, creating something completely unique for the City of Richmond. Building on Cascade City, we are eager to bring thoughtful, evolved design to the Olympic Oval community. Adding a third tower and signature hotel element with Studio Munge brings even more excitement and opportunity to create something exceptional.”

Inspired by the river that flows through Richmond, a city shaped by water, the project will incorporate the same softness and flow to the architectural form as Cascade City. The ideas and forward-looking architectural language that informed Cascade City, says Matis, will be further refined in this next iteration. “This will be totally unique, not only for Richmond, but within greater-Vancouver,” said Matis. “We’ve never done anything like it.”

The interior design concept is still being developed, but there will be an elaborate clubhouse amenity for hotel guests and residents that will look and feel more like a country club, with design elements influenced by high-end Asian hotels. Rooms and residences will feature large outdoor living spaces and balconies to improve livability and to comply with our post-pandemic needs. Landscaping will feature extensive garden spaces for hotel guests and residents.

“Very early on we wanted to create a multi-layered, experiential destination that would help residents and travelers connect with their surroundings in a meaningful way. This project goes far beyond a typical development. It is a sophisticated dialogue with the local context at the intersection of urban and nature,” says Alessandro Munge, Founder & Design Director, Studio Munge. “Our design language goes beyond form and function to include emotion and purpose, creating an energy that lifts spirits. Our contemporary interiors will be thoughtfully connected to the outside framing beautiful views over the landscaped podium, mountains and ocean. Resort-like, the guest journey will be curated with high-impact, memorable design moments complemented with all the elegant and purposeful details that bring a building to life. A great sense of materiality, dynamic forms, and luxury in the execution of our details will give this Richmond Oval development a unique identity, making the vibrant property a destination like no other in the area.”
